Saying goodbye isn’t easy.  However, saying goodbye creates lasting connections between the old and the new.

  • VISIT favorite places. People need to say goodbye to places, as well as to people. Eat at your favorite restaurant one last time or bicycle around familiar places.

  •  HOST a going-away party. If possible, host two going-away parties; one for you and your adult friends, and another for your child and his/her friends.

  •  ASK friends to write going-away notes. This offers your guests an opportunity to share and express their emotions. And of course, it also creates special keepsakes for you and your family.

  •  PROVIDE an “autograph” animal or book. Invite all your friends to sign.

  •  GIVE your friends something to remember you by. Plants that you can’t take with you, or a pencil or key chain naming your new town, make good mementoes.

  •  MAKE a Community Scrapbook. The goal is to say goodbye to your old community. Ask each family member to find one item that best represents what’s most important to them in your community.

  •  TAKE pictures or even make a videotape of the house, neighborhood and school.

Staying In Touch

  • USE email to stay in touch. Instant message services let you communicate in real time.

  • WRITE letters. This may seem “old-fashioned” to many but everyone loves to get mail!

  • SEND electronic cards or photos of your new home and community.

  • SET up a webcam so your friends and family can see you in your new environment.

  • EXCHANGE small gifts and tokens.

  • CALL your friends and family. Many cell phone plans are free on the weekends or you can buy phone cards.
