BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS:
As
part of our dedication to our students and parents, Yuma School District One
offers a before and after school child care program called Discovery
Club.
The after-school programs involve Yuma School District One's
resident elementary school age children in grades K-6 in a planned and
well-supervised program. This unique program provides a blending of enrichment
activities and learning experiences based on the developmental needs of each
child. The home-like, relaxed yet productive, atmosphere of the centers and the
planned program are designed to foster the social, physical, emotional, and
cognitive growth of each child.
In order to stimulate interests and
encourage the mastery of new skills, a "mini-club" approach is utilized to offer
a wide variety of opportunities for discovery in the areas of arts and crafts,
science, team sports, reading, recreation, music, drama, and English/Spanish as
a second language. These "mini-clubs" are rotated regularly to allow for small
groups of children to choose from activities of specific interest to them. A
quiet time will be set aside each day for homework help and
encouragement.
The staff members responsible for the Discovery Club are
trained professionals and community volunteers. Together, they plan activities
to help the children to develop physically and emotionally, expand their
knowledge and interests, build their self-esteem and sound personal
relationships.
A Discovery Club is located at; Desert Mesa, Gwyneth Ham,
McGraw, Post, Otondo and Rolle.
If you need additional information,

EXCEPTIONAL
CHILDREN:
Gifted programs in the District provide extensive resources to
develop extraordinary abilities. These programs currently involve five percent
of the District's students. Programming involves special classes in literature,
science and math in the junior highs. Programs such as Odyssey of the Mind,
Olympics of the Mind, Future Problem Solving, Science Fairs, and subject area
decathlons, are available to students, including those who have been identified
as gifted. In addition to school wide projects, regular classroom teachers
provide program adaptations for the benefit of exceptionally able
students.
When you register your child for school, you will need a
certified copy of the child's birth certificate and also a current copy of their
immunization record. Children must be 5 years of age by September 1st to enter
Kindergarten
Parents should be prepared to provide copies of report
cards, verification of grade placement, credits earned, or other credentials
when they enroll students. Children's first admission to school requires a birth
certificate to verify age. The schools require students to meet the
Arizona requirements for immunization and to have social security
numbers.
