There are a number of realtors in the area. Personnel
live in Las Cruces (26 miles), Alamogordo (45 miles), and El Paso, TX (50
miles). Car pools help to alleviate some of the financial burden of a
long commute. Rental housing in the Las Cruces area is 96% occupied,
El Paso has a current 89% occupancy rate. Alamogordo seems to have a fair choice
of residences but is a smaller community. As all but 1% of the
military population assigned to WSMR must live on-post, and 25% of the post
housing is occupied by civilian personnel, any community housing questions can
be directed to Larry Kibiloski, Relocation Assistance Program Manager at ACS:
DSN 258-6767; (505) 678-6767. WSMR staff living off-post come from
the three surrounding communities, and each is very different from the
others.

* For both cities, if you are
interested in purchasing a home please contact a realtor. Homes in Las Cruces
tend to be more expensive, however the taxes are cheaper. In El Paso, you get
more square footage for your money, however the taxes are a bit more expensive
and the drive to WSMR, depending on where you live can be up to an hour.
** Prices for Apartments in Alamogordo are close to the apartments in
Las Cruces, homes are a bit cheaper for square footage. The only drawback to
Alamogordo is the shopping. Alamogordo is a smaller community and offers a
Wal-Mart, several dinning out facilities, and a few other grocery stores, it's
just not a developed as Las Cruces. There is also Holloman AFB just outside of
town and using your military id, you can shop at their commissary. Drive time to
WSMR is about 30-45 minutes, depending on traffic, however it's all highway
miles traveling the speed limit of 70mph.
