When first arriving to Whidbey Island, you will need to enroll your student with the respective school district. Parents should bring copies of report cards, verification of grade placement, credits earned, and any other pertinent information to assist counselors and school administrators in placing students in the proper level of instruction.
Currently there are two middle schools in Oak Harbor, one in Coupeville and one in Anacortes. In Oak Harbor because there are two middle schools, you will be assigned to the school closest to the area you reside in.
First time enrollment in the public schools requires a birth certificate and immunization record. Children entering kindergarten must be 5 years old by August 31. Children entering first grade must be 6 years old by September 1. The Washington State Department of Health requires the following for school entrance:
*New Vaccine: Hepatitis B A three-dose series of hepatitis B vaccine will be required for children entering school (kindergarten) for the first time.
*Now Mandatory: Pertussis Vaccine Immunization against pertussis, which has been optional, will be required for school entry.
*Required by 13th Birthday: MMR Vaccine The "old" law required children to have a second dose of live virus measles vaccine before entering 6th grade and before the 13th birthday.
*Additional Dose of Vaccine: Tetanus A "booster" dose of tetanus vaccine will be required before a student reaches her or his 17th birthday.
The Boys and Girls Club and the MWR Youth Center both offer after school activities for all ages.
Due to budget cuts, transportation is limited in the Oak Harbor area so be sure to ask whether your child will have busing access.
