You are allowed to ship one privately owned vehicle at government expense to or from an overseas area when permitted  The entitlement to ship an eligible POV from overseas to the United States is not dependent on whether a POV was shipped to the overseas area.  For the purpose of this shipment. a POV is a vehicle owned by the member or a dependent of the member (member must show proof of ownership, registration or lease agreement) that:  It is self-propelled; is required to be licensed to travel overland on public highways; has four or more wheels; and is dsigned to carry passengers or property.  At the option of the member shipping a vehicle overseas, a motorcycle or moped may be considered a POV if the member does not ship a vehicle with four or more wheels under the same set of military orders.  The government will not shnip a vehicle intended for commercial use, nor will it pay all shipping charges for vehicles exceeding 20-measurement tons (800 cubic feet) in size.  A member who ships a vehicle exceeding this size must pay the excess shipping charges.

For more inoformation regarding shipment of a POV, contact the Personal Property Office.POV should be delivered to port to departure of person on whose orders the shipment is to be made.  This includes dependent travel authorizations when no POV has been previously shipped on sponsor's orders.  A POV will be accpeted for shipment if delivered to the CONUS port within 90 days after the sponsor or dependent has departed for an overseas tour of duty in excess of one year.  When delivery of POV to the port has been delayed beyond 90 days from the date of departure of member (or dependents)from CONUS, POV may only be shipped upon written approval from overseas Commander.

Make sure POV is in safe operable condition when arriving at port.  Failure to do this may cause Terminal Commander to refuse POV shipment.

Make sure POV meets any host nation emission control and safety standards.  Discuss host nation requirements with your local transportation office before departing your current duty station.

Only authorized personal articles may remain in your POV when it is turned in for processing.  The value of tools and tool box may not exceed the value prescribed by the JFTR.  AM/FM, citizen band, radios, tape decks, and other accessories not permanently mounted must be removed before turning in POV for shipment.  Shipment of flammable or hazardous substances, including flares, waxes, solvents and polishes is prohibited.  Only the following items of personal property may remain in the vehicle:  vehicular tools such as jacks, tire irons, tire chains, tire inflators, first aid kits, jumper cables, warning triangles, basic hand tools spare tire, and 2 snow tires (mounted or unmounted), cribs and child car seats;  and small items such as thermos bottles, bottle warmers, and cushions used for your comfort and convenience during motor trips to the port.
