History, nature, boating, fishing, recreation - these are some of the favorite activities enjoyed on Virginia's Eastern Shore.  In addition to the natural attractions in the area, you can enjoy the local festivals and carnivals.  There are local art, craft, seafood and music festivals to enjoy throughout the year.  MWR offers discounted tickets to the areas local baseball stadium as well as to Virginia's  major theme parks like Busch Gardens and Kings Dominion.  One very well known event in this area is the Annual Chincoteague Pony Penning which takes place on the last Wednesday and Thursday of July in Chincoteague, Virginia which is just 7 miles to our east.  This event was made famous by Margaret Henry's 1950 book called "Misty of Chincoteague."  This annual event draws thousands of visitors from around the world to the small island to enjoy the pony swim and auction.  Listed below are a few of the local favorite events available to both our single and married military personnel to enjoy.  For more information on local events, contact the Chamber of Commerce in that area.Annually, major festivals/events are staged by the communities to celebrate the heritage of the area.  The outdoorsman will find excellent fishing, crabbing, camping, hunting, boating, sailing and swimming.  A short distance to the north, Ocean City, Maryland offers all of the attractions of a seaside resort and convention center, providing name entertainment, concerts and cultural events.  Personnel and their families are permitted to fish and hunt on Wallops Island after working hours and on weekends when operations are not being conducted.  A hunting and fishing license is required but may be purchased for a nominal fee.  The CBQ has horseshoes and other recreational equipment items that may be checked out from the MWR custodian.Since SCSC is located in such a rural location, MWR offers a broad range of activities for the sailors and their family members.  There are annual events such as golf tournaments, command picnics, a command ball, and other sports activities as well as a variety of trips to amusement parks.  A ticket rebate program is available along with discount tickets to major amusements parks and local ball parks.  Movies are shown weekly on base at no costs.No programs are in place at this time, however, since the addition of the Cropper Facility, SCSC has implemented various activities for children and teens.There is no established Youth Program at SCSC at this time, however, the local communities offer many activities and sports leagues for children.  Accomack County Parks and Recreation sponsors soccer, basketball and baseball.  They also sponsor a summer camp at the local schools.  The program is open to all Accomack County children ages 6-12 and runs from June to August.  The cost is $15 for the entire summer and they serve breakfast and lunch. MWR is currently working with a teen group to organize activities for teen dependents of military and civilian personnel.The local churches in the community have several programs for children and teens.  Check with your church for events and schedules.MWR has special events that include children and teens.  Amusement park trips, local minor leagues, movies, skating parties, etc.
