San Nicolas Island is located approximately 60 miles off the
coast of Point Mugu and covers over 13,000 acres. San Nicolas has a 10,000-foot
runway with approach and terminal facilities and a roll-on/roll-off pier for
transporting cargo to and from the Island. The primary mission of the
island is support for the telemetry equipment associated with the air and sea
test ranges. The island provides an unobstructed area of airspace in
which new weapons systems are tested.
San Nicolas Island is one of
California's key wildlife and archeological preservation areas. The
natural and cultural resources of San Nicolas Island are managed through the
efforts of Navy ecologists and archaeologists in cooperation with California
Department of Fish and Wildlife Service.
San Nicolas Island has single
rooms for all personnel, a 5 star galley, a gym, pool, bowling alley,
racquetball court, indoor basketball court, movie theater, club and mini-mart as
well as great opportunities for fishing, hiking, snorkeling,
etc.
