In the surrounding area there are other installations with
facilities and services that you might use. These other installations do not
necessarily belong to the major command or the same Service that you are
assigned to, but you are permitted to use their resources.
CHANNEL
ISLANDS AIR NATIONAL GUARD, 146th Airlift Wing, Port Hueneme, California, was
originally established in the mid-1920's in Santa Monica. In 1988 flight
operations moved to its present location right next door to Point Mugu, sharing
our major runways. The 146th Airlift Wing is comprised of some 1400
personnel, including more than 330 full time civil service, active duty, and
civilian personnel. Twelve C-130E Hercules aircraft are available for
air operations, flying federal and state missions to locations in the United
States and overseas. The Modular Airborne Fire Fighting Systems which
consist of portable, pressurized 3,000 gallon tanks containing either water or
water-based retardant, are loaded onto these Hercules aircraft to assist the
Forest Service in fighting fires. They have been called to duty many
times in southern California and have aided in the saving of lives and
property.
UNITED STATES COAST GUARD, Channel Islands Harbor Station,
Oxnard, California was established in 1972. It is approximately 12
miles from Point Mugu and located on the east side of Channel Islands
Harbor. This is a 36- man station whose primary mission is search and
rescue. The station provides radio guard on distress frequencies for
the northern half of the 11th Coast Guard District. Station boat
crews also participate in law enforcement patrols. The Coast Guard
also has a recreation area available to active duty, retired military,
reservists and family members. There are five camper/trailer pads
with water, electricity, BBQ pits and picnic tables with a community sewage
disposal facility. This facility is within walking distance of
swimming, surfing, surf fishing, hiking, charter boat fishing, and it is a great

There are two other
installations in the area: Los Angeles Air Force Base which is approximately 60
miles to the south, and Vandenberg Air Force Base located approximately 100
miles north.
