LOCATION - Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) Port Hueneme/Point Mugu is located on the vast Oxnard plain, just 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles, California in the western portion of the USA.  The coastal area of Ventura County boasts some of the finest weather available anywhere in the world.  The superb weather combined with miles of beautiful shoreline and nearby mountains offer a unique scenic and enjoyable environment. NBVC's nearest cities of Port Hueneme, Oxnard, and Camarillo offer a wide variety of shopping, restaurants, and recreational opportunities to suit everyone.  Ventura County is considered a "High Cost" area but is very supportive of its military residents.  Many businesses offer military discounts and both landlords and employers seek military members to live and work here.

HISTORY - Since the 1940's Naval Air Station Point Mugu has had an impact on the research, development, test, and evaluation of missile weapons systems, and Construction Battalion Center Port Hueneme has provided integral supplies, equipment, camps and roads, to support not only the Seabees, but the Army, Air Force and Marines as well.  But as the 1990's decade came to a close, Point Mugu and Port Hueneme's missions merged as one base with two sites.

Reporting to U.S. Pacific Fleet via regional management by Navy Region Southwest in San Diego, NBVC was born with the Port Hueneme site as providers of base operating support and Point Mugu as provider of aviation support.  See our installation home page for more details.

MISSION - Naval Base Ventura County provides the Pacific Fleet with a premier mobilization site, complete with a deep water port, rail head, and airfield - all in one package.  In support of the Pacific Fleet, the two sites house E2 squadrons, a C130 squadron, a P3 Test and Evaluation squadron, 4 Seabee Battalions,  reserve units, and various staff, schools and support organizations. See Major Unit Listing for a comprehensive listing of commands.

POPULATION SERVED - Over 1200 military family members reside in military housing at Point Mugu, Port Hueneme and Camarillo.  Over 1000 Department of Defense Civil Service employees and contractors are employed in support of the missile range, airfield and support services at Point Mugu and over 2000 are employed at Port Hueneme working at the various engineering support facilities.  The active duty on both sites, consists of aviators, Seabees, Air Force students, personnel support, and mobilizing reservists numbering at over 4000.

SPONSORSHIP - The Fleet & Family Support Center can assist new members in contacting their sponsor.  All new members should check in at the Building One Quarterdeck on Mugu Road at the Point Mugu site see Directions.  The Base Operator numbers are (805)982-4711 for Port Hueneme and (805)989-1110 for Point Mugu.

TEMPORARY QUARTERS - Naval Base Ventura County has temporary housing for single and married members at the Bachelor Officer Quarters(BOQ) and Bachelor Enlisted Quarters(BEQ)on both the Port Hueneme and Point Mugu sites (reference BOQ and BEQ listings).  There is a Navy Lodge located on Port Hueneme and the Beach Motel on Point Mugu.  RV Parks are located at both sites.  Reservations may be made in advance see listings under temporary quarters.

RELOCATION ASSISTANCE - The Fleet & Family Support Center at (805) 982-5037 can provide local school information, literature on the local area, computer access, copy/fax services, and loan items(coffee pots, flatware, dinnerware, etc.)

CRITICAL INSTALLATION INFORMATION -  Naval Base Ventura County encompasses two separate geographical locations about 10 miles apart.  Some services are provided on both bases and some are only available at Point Mugu or Port Hueneme (ie. gas stations on both sites but only one commissary at Port Hueneme.) Asking questions and planning ahead are the best methods to ensure you make the right decisions concerning housing particularly if you have family members.  Having a personal vehicle is crucial as well!  There is no shuttle between the two sites and community transportation is limited. Special Notes:  The state of California has the toughest Driving Under the Influence (DUI) regulations in the United States so be aware and take care!  Also, No Smoking is allowed in any establishment that serves food anywhere in California (Bars included!).
