MILITARY
SEPARATEES AND RETIREES: The Transition Assistance Program (TAP) is
available to military members who will soon be separating or retiring from the
military. There is a 4-day workshop scheduled once a
month. The Lompoc Valley labor market area is comprised of the city
of Lompoc, Mission Hills/Mesa Oaks, Vandenberg Village, and Vandenberg Air Force
Base. There is growing diverse labor base in the Lompoc
Valley. Although agriculture, mining, oil development, and aerospace
are major employers in the area, many other significant labor force categories
comprise the market area. These include construction, manufacturing,
transportation and public utilities, wholesale and retail trade, finance,
insurance, real estate, services, and government. As of July 2003 the
labor force totals 18,900 and an unemployment rate of 5.1%
The future
looks good for VAFB, with missile and space training programs moving to the base
and commercial space launch activities showing considerable promise.
