Vandenberg beaches are beautiful, but they are dangerous for
swimmers and surfers. PREVENTION: Some base beaches are
STRICTLY OFF-LIMITS FOR SWIMMING AND SURFING because of dangerous
undertow. Many of the beach areas are against cliffs and can be
extremely dangerous when the high tides roll in. Fishing is allowed
at all beaches. Beaches have restricted access from 1 March through
30 September to protect the endangered snowy plover.
The following
section provides a glimpse of what there is to see and do.
SERVICES: (MWR) Vandenberg AFB is proud to offer a variety of
exciting leisure activities for the military member and their
families. Everyone is encouraged to be part of the fun and adventure
by participating in organized sporting events, aquatics, outdoor recreation,
entertainment, crafts and many other enriching programs. The Services
Squadron Directory is updated quarterly and pamphlets are available at the
Newcomers Orientation upon your arrival. The contact section provides
detailed information about each service offered and private organizations that
are chartered on VAFB. Join in and make new friends!
Note
about Services Card: Civilians (DoD and NAF), and contractors who work on VAFB
are eligible to join the Pacific Coast Club and, in turn, can use their
membership card in most other Services facilities. Applications are
available in most Services' facilities.
The Vandenberg schools have a
variety of clubs and opportunities for socializing. Additional on-base
activities follow in the Record Listing. The Youth Center has a variety of youth
sports programs: Football, Soccer, Baseball, Softball, T-Ball, Volleyball,
Basketball, Gymnastics, and Cheerleading
Bicycling is an almost
year-round activity. Following are some
tips:
- California Blvd is prohibited for bicycle riding on
the street. The sidewalk that parallels it has been designated as a
Bike Route. Bicyclists using the California Blvd Bike Route should
stop at the intersections and dismount their bicycle, then cross on foot once
they have checked for traffic. - Wear brightly colored or reflective
clothing if riding at night or inclement weather--including fog.
- Use your headlight during nighttime or reduced visibility.
- Inspect your reflectors. Make sure they are installed,
in good repair, and clean. - Cross Reference INSTALLATION,
Regulations, Bicycle Helmet Law.
There are many Religious Education
opportunities available for children age 3 through
