WHAT IS MILITARY SPOUSE EMPLOYMENT
PREFERENCE? It is a preference for employment for current Federal employees in
DoD appropriated fund civilian positions for which the military spouse is
best-qualified at grade levels GS-5 through GS/GM-15 (or equivalent wage system
positions). Preference for NAFI positions is at grades UA-8 and below (and
equivalent positions), and for those jobs paid at an hourly rate. Depending on
qualifications and experience, the spouse is afforded serious consideration for
competitive civil service vacancies in the States, Territories and Possessions,
for competitive or excepted-service positions in foreign areas (except Panama)
and for a range of NAFI vacancies in clubs, exchanges, retail stores, snack bars
and related facilities both in the States and abroad.
Preference does not
apply to positions in the National Security Agency or the Defense Intelligence
Agency or to positions primarily charged with intelligence,
counter-intelligence, investigative or national security
responsibilities.
