In Transit Emergencies

No matter how well you plan, emergencies do happen. First of all, make sure you have your important papers with you, and not packed in your household goods. Telephone numbers to your Commanding Officer and sponsor can be invaluable. The American Red Cross is always available for emergency aid anywhere you may be. Contact the nearest chapter through the phone directory. It can sometimes help with emergency financial assistance and contacting individuals who will need to know where you are and what is happening.

If you are traveling within the United States during an emergency, you can reach the nearest USCG Work-Life Office by calling 1-800-872-4957. Extension 317 will contact the ISC Ketchikan office, if this is your new duty station. The Work-life Office may be able to assist you with a Mutual Assistance Loan or by contacting your Command.

There is also a valuable brochure entitled "Help Along the Way" put out by the Alaska Section of Community Health and Emergency Medical Services and the Alaska Highway Safety Office. Copies are available from Betsy Longenbaugh, Transition and Relocation Manager.Members with medical emergencies should contact the Valdez Hospital or call 911.

Property management emergency calls should go to the Coast Guard Public Works Department if you're living in Coast Guard housing.
