No matter how well you plan, emergencies do
happen. First of all, make sure you have all your important papers
with you - not packed with your household goods. Numbers for your
Commanding Officer and your sponsor can be invaluable in case of emergency while
in transit.
The American Red Cross is always available for emergency aid
anywhere you may be. Contact the nearest chapter (phones numbers are
usually listed in the white pages of the local phone directory). They
can sometimes help with emergency financial assistance and contacting
individuals that will need to know where you are and what's
happening.
Plan for the unexpected and it probably won't happen. Navy
Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) is a non-profit charitable organization
whose purpose is to assist Navy and Marine Corps personnel and their families in
time of need.
The Society is sponsored by the Department of the Navy and
operates nearly 300 offices ashore and afloat at Navy and Marine Corps commands
throughout the world.
Services NMCRS provides are loans and grants for
emergency needs-not wants! Needs include rent, food, utilities,
deposits for rent, emergency travel in time of death or illness, funeral
expenses, patients share of medical bill after CHAMPUS, dental care, disasters,
loss of pay records or allotment checks, theft of funds, and necessary car
repairs.
Trained Volunteers ensure requests are handled by persons
familiar with the special conditions of service life and who have a realistic
understanding of the potential hardship facing servicemembers and their
families.
If you have an appointment with Navy-Marine Corp Relief
Society, bring your I.D. card, current LES, and bills when applying for a
loan.
