UNITED STATES SOUTHERN COMMAND:
The 1977 Panama Canal
Treaty mandated the withdrawal of the U.S. military from Panama by December 31,
1999. As a result, United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM)
relocated to Miami. SOUTHCOM provides operational command and control
for all U.S. land, sea, and air activities in the Southern Hemisphere and the
Caribbean. Headquarters is located 4 miles west of Miami International Airport,
at NW 91st Avenue and NW 33rd Street in the WestPoint Business
Park.
Directions to SOUTHCOM:
From I-95, go west on 836 (Dolphin
Expressway), exit right (north) onto NW 87th Avenue (Galloway Road), turn left
(west) approximately 2 miles ahead on the left onto NW 33rd
street. Follow road back approximately 3/4 mile and turn right
(north)onto 3511 NW 91st Avenue. (NOTE: Their Family Support Center
is located at 8300 NW 33rd Street, Suite 110, Miami, FL, 33122, Codina Building,
305-437-2265/2726).
HOMESTEAD AIR RESERVE STATION (ARS):
In 1992,
Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of Homestead Air Force Base. It is
now an Air Force Reserve training facility. It is also home of the
Florida Air National Guard Readiness Detachment. Consequently, it is NOT listed
in SITES, but it does have some facilities that will be of use to military

ARS:
Homestead ARS is located approximately 30 miles south of Miami in
Homestead. From the Florida Turnpike, go south to exit 6, turn right
(Tallahassee Road-137th Avenue), at the next light (Moody Dr-268th Street) turn
right, at the next light (Waldin Drive-280th Street) turn right which will lead
you to the base entrance. From US1, south to (Moody Drive-268th
Street), turn left at the light, go to the third light (Waldin Drive-280th
Street), turn right which will lead you to the base entrance.
