The federal government is a natural place for military spouses to
look for employment. There are approximately 26,000 federal jobs in
the Miami-Dade/Broward area. Many times, the spouses are given preference in
Department of Defense employment. It is important to note that the Department of
Homeland Security, under which the U.S. Coast Guard operates, DOES NOT offer
spouse preference in hiring.
The majority of federal agencies list their
jobs openings on the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM), the official
"civilian personnel" agency of the federal government,
website. However, not all federal agencies advertise, recruit and
hire through OPM. If you are targeting a particular federal agency
and do not see their job listings on the OPM website, it is recommended that you
call that agency office in your local area and ask someone in their Human
Resources Office how they advertise their jobs. If there is not a local office,
find the agency's webpage on the Internet and check for employment listings
there.
Federal job listings can also be found on: Fed World,
Federal Jobs Digest, and Govt Jobs Career Center. Look for them on
the Internet.
FORMS REQUIRED:
Today there is no "standard" way to
apply for a federal job. Different federal agencies require different
forms. Examples include: Standard Form (SF) 171, Optional
Form (OF) 612, or a federal resume (different from a regular
resume). In addition, the federal agency could require Knowledge,
Skills, and Abilities (aka Qualifying Factors) statements regarding the
job. To save yourself time, it is best to read the job announcement
carefully looking for job application procedures or call the Human Resources
office in that particular agency and ask which forms are required. This section
includes Federal, State, County, and Local City government
information.
