The EFMP was developed by the Army to provide a
comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach for medical, educational, community
support, and personal services for family members. An Exceptional
Family Member (EFM) is a soldier's family member, spouse or children, with any
physical, emotional, developmental, or intellectual disability that require
special treatment, therapy, education, training or counseling. It is
MANDATORY to enroll in this program if you have a family member with special
needs. Soldiers are responsible for keeping the medical and/or
special education needs documentation current, updating as EFM conditions change
or every three years, whichever comes first.
Information concerning
enrollment in the EFMP or any of the data used in the program is not made
available to the selection boards and will not adversely affect selection for
promotion, schools, or assignment. Enrollment allows Army personnel
agencies to consider the special needs of exceptional family members in the
assignment process. When possible, soldiers are assigned to an area
where the medical and special education needs of their family member can be
met.
