Please look at the Record Listings for
several other ideas.MWR activities on the installation are
limited. However, there are an enormous number of activities
available in the local community. Stop at ACS one of
our guide to events in the METRO WEST area.Army Community Service
(ACS) maintains listings of social and cultural events taking place, year round,
in the Massachusetts and New England area.
Local newspapers carry
information on sports club and social activities in their area.
Each
community offers town government sponsored activities for youngsters at minimal
expense. These activities will vary from town to town. Local public school
systems offer after school clubs, social activities, and sports during the
school year.
There are always a wide variety of activities to choose from
in the Boston, MA metropolitan area, which are advertised each Thursday in a
special supplement to the Boston Globe newspaper.
Downtown Boston is a 45
minute drive from Devens during non-rush hour times and weekendsBecause of its
size and the fact that housing is scattered throughout four towns, there is no
recreation/sports program on the installation. General recreation and
sports programs are handled by the individual towns, usually through the town
Recreation Department. Most run adult education programs which are
reasonable and usually very good. At a minimum, towns will have
baseball, basketball, soccer and hockey programs. Most will have
football, will have a pool or a town beach, conservation areas, hiking trails,
etc. Contact the local recreation department or stop by at ACS and
pickup our guide to the towns of the Metro-West Area. There is no Child and Teen
Religeous Program at Soldier Systems Center so you will have to use the services
in the surrounding communities. Fortunately, there are
churches of all denominations within a very short distance. SEE THE
LISTINGS UNDER LOCAL COMMUNITY - RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES.There is something to do
every weekend. See examples under LOCAL COMMUNITY - EVENTS
CALENDER. You can stop by at ACS and pickup our Boston Travel

borrow one of our guide books to the Boston area. Always check the
Thursday Calender Section of the Boston Globe newspaper which has very detailed
listings of all cultural and recreational events in the area. You can
also visit the Boston Globe Web site for extensive listings, restaurant reviews,
and lins to other useful sites.
