The Dare County Bomb Range is located on the northeast coast of
North Carolina. There are approximately 30 personnel assigned with a
MSgt as the site manager. Personnel live approximately 45 miles away
in Manteo which is on Roanoke Island, a resort area. Government
transportation is provided to and from work. The nearest commissary
and BX are 100 miles away at Oceana NAS VA. There is a medical
agreement with the local community for military personnel only and dependents
use TRICARE or go to the hospital at Oceana NAS.
Apartments rent for
approximately $500.00 per month. Single personnel usually share an
apartment. Even though it is a resort town, the rent stays the same
summer and winter. Speaking of winter, it does get cold there and has
been known to snow. There can be some pretty bad storms during the
winter and hurricanes can be an every day occurrence. There are
excellent hunting and fresh and salt water fishing.
