CARS REGISTERED IN NC: If you are arriving from an
overseas base and have purchased a new vehicle there, you must have a
manufacturer's certificate of origin and the registration. The
maximum charge to register the car will be $207.00 which will include the
license plate, taxes, and title. From then on, license plates will
cost approximately $20.00 each year. Military do not pay property
tax.
For those arriving from a stateside base who want to register their
vehicle(s) in North Carolina, there will be a license fee of $20.00 for each
vehicle, a road/highway use tax that is a one time charge, a title fee of $35.00
and a value tax which is 3% of the value of the vehicle. The maximum
for military members is $150.00. This is a one time
charge.
All registered vehicles must pass a state inspection which cost
approximately $9.25. If the vehicle has tinted windows, an additional
$10.00 is charged to determine if the tint meets state requirement
(35%). This is only when you have a NC tag on the
vehicle.
Out-of-state vehicles/tags are exempted from tint
inspections.
