LOCATION:  US Army Garrison-Michigan (Selfridge) is co-located with the 127th Wing, Michigan Air National Guard (MIANG) located in Southeast Michigan, 25 miles north of Detroit.  While not traditional "military" towns, Chesterfield and Harrison Townships' community members are very supportive of our military members.  The Detroit Metro area is steeped auto industry history, Motown Magic, and great summer and winter Great Lakes adventures.  Home to the World Champion Detroit Pistons and Red Wings, the Institute of the Arts, Automotive Hall of fame, Motown and Henry Ford Museums, and the Henry Ford Fairlane Estates, "Hockey Town" has something for everyone.

HISTORY:  Selfridge was officially activated as a military installation on July 1, 1917. The field was then renamed "Selfridge Field" in honor of 1st Lt. Thomas E. Selfridge, the first person to lose his life because of an aircraft accident. In October 1956, the 1st Fighter Wing was organized here. The Air Force Reserve's 403rd Tactical Airlift Wing was transferred to Selfridge in November 1957. In December 1970, the Michigan Air National Guard moved onto the installation from Detroit Metropolitan Airport. On July 1, 1971, Selfridge Air Base became Selfridge Air National Guard Base, one of the most complex bases in the nation. The U.S. Army Garrison-Michigan began as an adjunct to the 28th Artillery Group designated the U.S. Army Support Detachment in 1971. The Support Detachment was under the operational control of the then newly activated Detachment 1 of the Michigan Air National Guard. The primary mission of the Support Detachment was that of operating and maintaining base housing and providing morale support activities for additional historical information visit the U.S. Army Garrison homepage.

MISSION:  The mission of USAG-M is to provide quality of life programs, housing referrals and base operations support to personnel from all four branches of the Department of Defense (DOD) serving in active, National Guard and Reserve status. USAG-M provides the same services to the US Coast Guard (USCG) and Boarder Patrol (USBP).

POPULATION SERVED:  Selfridge is the only reserve forces base to host active duty units of all five armed services, and reserve components of the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force, Selfridge Air National Guard Base is the busiest, most diverse military installation in the United States dedicated primarily to the training of the Air National Guard and the Reserve Force components of the military services. Today U.S. Army Garrison-Michigan continues to serve more than 55000 Retirees, Civilians, Active, Guard and Reserve personnel and their families, from all branches of DOD, the DHS (USCG) and USBP.  Currently the installation houses USAG-M, 127th Wing, Naval Air Reserve Center (NARCEN), U.S. Coast Guard Air Station (USCG-AS) and Marine Wing Support Group 47 (MWSG-47), along with numerous smaller units.
