Families with special needs children or elder care parents may
sometimes fill overwhelmed when PCSing to a new base. Locating the
necessary resources for a family member can sometimes be a
challenge. To help ease the stress of relocating it is a good idea to
start preparing beforehand to help identify available resources and start
contacting them for information needed once you have arrived in the area.
WIC
is a nutrition program for:
Pregnant women
Breastfeeding women (up to
one year postpartum)
Non-breastfeeding, postpartum women (up to 6 months
postpartum)
Infants
Children until the age of 5 years
The WIC
Program provides:
Nutrition education including breastfeeding support
Nutritious foods to supplement a person's regular diet
Screening and
referral
WIC participants must meet certain financial requirements and be
"nutritionally at risk" to qualify for the program.
The Colorado State
Food Stamps Program assists low-income individuals and families who need
assistance purchasing food. Individuals and families should apply for food stamp
benefits at their local county department of social services. The Food Stamp
Program is offered in at least one location in all Colorado counties. The county
worker will interview applicants and determine the household eligibility for
benefits. They will provide the applicant with a Quest card that can be used to
purchase groceries at any participating grocery store or other
retailer.
