Offering an ideal blend of business opportunity, culture and outdoor recreation, Colorado is home to over 25 ski resorts. Colorado Springs is a vacation haven drawing over 6 million visitors annually. The Olympic Complex, former home of Ent Air Force Base and the headquarters of the North American Defense Command, officially became USOC administrative headquarters in July 1978. Colorado Springs is the largest municipality in El Paso County with an estimated population of 360,000.  Colorado Springs is located on the eastern boundary of the Rocky Mountains with the 14,110-foot Pikes Peak to the west.

HISTORY
The history of Schriever AFB goes back to the decision to establish a new space control facility approved by the Secretary of Defense in September 1979. The site, formerly known as Falcon Air Station, was chosen from 12 possible sites and ground breaking took place in May 1983. On June 5, 1998, Falcon Air Station was renamed Schriever Air Force Base in honor of retired General Bernard A. Schriever, who pioneered the development of the nation's ballistic missile programs and is recognized as "the father of the United States Air Force's space and missile program."

MISSION
Schriever AFB is home to the 50th Space Wing. The Wing's mission is to provide command and control for Department of Defense operational military satellites and operate and manage the worldwide Air Force Satellite Control Network.  The wing operates satellite operations centers at Schriever AFB, remote tracking stations and other command and control facilities around the world.  These facilities monitor satellites during launch, put the satellites in their proper orbits following launch, operate the satellites while they are in orbit and fix satellite anomalies when they occur. The wing has 20 units at 24 locations worldwide.  Two of Schriever's major tenant units are the Space Innovation and Development Center and the Joint National Integrated Center.

SPONSORSHIP
Upon receiving PCS orders it is important to gather as much information about your new location. The sponsorship program is a great way to accomplish this. Units should assign sponsors to in-bound personnel. The sponsor should contact you and send a sponsor package for your use.  Sponsors are a great resource for you before, during and after your arrival. They can assist you with questions, make lodging arrangements and meet you upon arrival to the area. If you have not received a sponsor or sponsor package, please contact the Schriever Family Support Center at DSN 560-3920 or Commercial (719) 567-3920.

During normal duty hours, contact your sponsor or the unit you are assigned to.  If they are unable to assist you, contact the Military Personnel Flight at DSN 560-5900 or Commercial (719) 567-5900.  Everyone assigned to Schriever will need to report to Pass and Registration, Bldg 15 located west of the Enoch gate. You will need to provide the following: copy of your orders, driver's license, auto insurance and registration.  A Colorado emission test is required before you are issued a permanent pass. An emission test can be done at the Peterson Auto Hobby Shop or most services stations. If you arrive after normal duty hours, please report to the 24 hour arrival point at the Pikes Peak Lodging Office, Building 1042 on Peterson AFB, phone (719) 597-2010. When you reach the base the gate guard can direct you to the Pikes Peak Lodging Office. This office can also help you get in touch with your sponsor, or your unit's INTRO Monitor.
