On O'ahu, "TheBus" is Hawaii's primary resource for public
transportation. It travels the entire island for a single fare which
is currently $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for students (ages
6-19). Fare includes free transfers for rides continuing in the same
direction. Riders must have exact fare since drivers do not carry
change.
A monthly bus pass can be purchased for $40.00, and
is good for an unlimited number of rides. Students of high school
age and younger can obtain a pass for $20.00.
You must be 65
years of age or older (official documents are needed) to be eligible for a
senior citizen bus pass for an annual fee of $30.00.
Another program for
qualifying senior citizens and persons with a disability is a bus pass valid for
4 years for $10.00, paying $1.00 per trip. You must apply at the
TheBus Pass office.
Monthly passes are available at all Foodland
supermarkets, all 7-Eleven stores, Star Markets, and Satellite City Halls on
Oahu.
Special buses equipped with a lift are available on certain routes
at designated bus stops; please call (808) 848-4444 for more
information. In addition, Handi-Van service is also provided for
persons with disabilities, island-wide. This service is a special
curb-to-curb service for persons by a private carrier under contract with the
City and County of Honolulu. Eligibility is based on a physical or
mental disability which prevents the applicant from using the regular city bus
service.
Commercial taxi service is available on O'ahu, check the yellow
pages for listings.
