LOCATION - Welcome aboard Naval Support Unit (NSU) Saratoga Springs, New York. NSU Saratoga Springs is located in one of the most scenic areas of the country the "Capital Region" of New York State. Located between the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains this area offers numerous recreational opportunities. Saratoga Springs is a very high cost area. HISTORY - Naval Administrative Unit Scotia, NY was renamed Naval Support Unit(NSU), Saratoga Springs in 1999 when the Officer in Charge and staff were relocated closer to the Navy concentration area. NSU supports commands within the New York State Capital Region, and is located approximately 35 miles north of the state capital, Albany. All NSU functions are located in Saratoga Springs, including the Fleet and Family Support Center, Housing Area, and mini Navy Exchange. Only the commissary and main Navy Exchange remain in Scotia, with plans to move both to Saratoga Springs in FY07.
MISSION - The primary mission of the installation is to support the Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit (NPTU) Ballston Spa, NY. NPTU is located in the town of West Milton, Saratoga County, about 10 miles southwest of NSU Saratoga Springs.
POPULATION SERVED - NSU serves an active duty Navy population of approximately 2300. In addition there is a large NY Air National Guard Base in Scotia, NY, as well as multiple Navy and Marine Corps Reserve centers and recruiters within a 50 mile radius.
SPONSORSHIP - Contact the sponsor coordinator upon receipt of orders for sponsor assignment. There are no Bachelor's Quarters, and public transportation is very limited, so a sponsor is imperative. Mail should be held at current post office location until a new local address is established.

RELOCATION ASSISTANCE - Family Newcomer Orientation/Indoctrination is conducted on the 1st Thursday after the NPTU class report date, at 6:00 PM, , at the Fleet and Family Support Center. CRITICAL INSTALLATION INFORMATION - The base is secured from 8:00p.m. - 6:00a.m. daily. WEAPONS: New York State law requires all pistols and handguns to be registered in the state without exception. Before you can possess a pistol in New York State, you must be a resident for one year or obtain a waiver PRIOR to your arrival. Firearms are allowed in government housing after completing the weapons application form at the Pass and ID office, bldg 101. Housing Area residents applying to keep weapons will: complete the Weapons Permit (NAVSUPPU SARATOGA SPRINGS NY INSTRUCTION 8024.1F refers); obtain approval from their Commanding Officer/Officer in Charge via their Command Master Chief/Senior Enlisted Leader, and return the completed permit to the Security Officer located in bldg 101.
