LOCATION-San Diego is located in the Sunshine State of California.  San Diego may have a higher cost of living than most cities in America but we are known as, "America's Finest City!"  San Diego is beautiful and the great weather is indescribable.

HISTORY-The property on which NBSD is now located was deeded to the U.S. government by the city of San Diego on September 3, 1919 to build a docking and fleet repair base. The property consisted of 21 water acres and 77.2 land acres with the former being mostly tidelands and marsh flats. After World War II, the name of the Repair Base was changed, for the last time, to NBSD. The mission was expanded to support the ships of the Pacific Fleet.

MISSION-To provide appropriate logistical support for the operating forces of the U.S. Navy and for dependent activities and other commands as assigned.

POPULATION SERVED-NBSD is homeport for approximately 60 Navy ships and homebase to 50 separate commands, each having specific and specialized fleet support purposes. It is the workplace for approximately 48,000 military and civilian personnel. Three thousand men and women are housed in modern, attractive bachelor quarters.

SPONSORSHIP-Per Navy Personnel Command a Sponsor can be requested, the link is available in the contacts section.  FFSC cannot stress enough the importance of having a Sponsor in San Diego to assist in your PCS move.  Your Sponsor is your link to your specific need in the San Diego area.  A Sponsor can also be requested through your new command, see major unit listings for contact information.  Be sure to ask your Sponsor your commands' specific check-in policy especially if you will be checking in while the ship is underway.

TEMPORARY QUARTERS-San Diego has no temporary housing however there is a Navy Lodge on NBSD.  It's highly recommended that reservations to the Navy Lodge be made well in advance due to San Diego being a large duty station.

RELOCATION ASSISTANCE-The Relocation Assistance Program at FFSC provides assistance in pre-move planning, workshops and seminars, one-on-one relocation assistance counseling, destination specific information such as Welcome Aboard Packages. FFSC and Armed Services YMCA have partnered to offer newcomers to San Diego an Out and About Tour of San Diego.  The tour allows you to sit back and be chauffeured around San Diego.  A great way to learn your way around, "America's Finest City!"

CRITICAL INSTALLATION INFORMATION-San Diego is a bit on the pricey side especially when it comes to real estate but fear not, FFSC can help.  FFSC offers a variety of financial classes from basic budgeting, investing to a very popular home buying class.  Childcare in San Diego is a hot commodity.  Our best recommendation is register for childcare as soon as you have orders to San Diego.  You can find a list of local child care facilities on MilitaryAvenue - Child Care - Child Care Centers or Home Care.
