While the Medical and Dental facilities aboard MCRD San Diego
generally restrict clients to on-board active duty service members and recruits,
Naval Medical Center, San Diego, serves the greater San Diego active duty
population and also provides service to certain dependents.
Located on
Florida Canyon Drive, adjacent to Balboa Park, Naval Medical Center, San Diego,
is the largest and most technologically advanced military medical treatment
facility in the world.
Nicknamed the "Starship"
of Navy Medicine, the hospital has played a vital role in the history of San
Diego for more than 70 years. From the original tent dispensary
established in 1917 to the high-tech, ultra-modern facility of the 1990's, the
mission has remained constant -- to provide the finest medical care
available.
There are almost half a million
people in San Diego County eligible to receive care at the Naval Medical
Center. This care is provided by a military staff of about 3,000 and
approximately 1,200 civilians. A leader in the medical field, the
hospital is a major teaching center, and also operates a network of clinics
located at area military installations. Through these clinics,
emergency and ambulatory care is provided to the active duty populations of all
San Diego based ship and shore commands.
Throughout its proud history, Navy Medical Center San Diego has established
itself as a leader in the field of medicine. That reputation for
excellence continues today as the "superstar" staff propels the "starship" into
