There are so many things to do and see in San Diego ... an
endless variety of arts, culture, sports, education, and outdoor activities
means that you could almost try something new every
week!
Outdoor recreation is a way of life in San
Diego. Opportunities for camping, hiking and cycling are
many. The Camping Connection staff at MCRD San Diego are well
acquainted with the greater San Diego area and can be of great assistance when
planning to spend time in the great outdoors.
All forms of team and
individual sports are available for all age groups. Golf, tennis,
bicycling, kite flying, walking, running, rollerblading, and horseback riding
are very popular. There are 70 miles of public beaches to be enjoyed,
with equipment rentals available at most locations for such activities as
surfing, boating, windsurfing and diving. Water temperatures vary
from 58 degrees in winter to about 70 degrees during the summer. The
Mission Bay Park area is especially popular for water sports and picnics.
The Marine Corps Community Services (formerly MWR) program at MCRD
supports and enhances the quality of life for Marines, their families, retired
military and all others involved with the Marine Corps family.
Our
recreation and fitness centers offer state of the art equipment; leisure time
activities which include fun runs, sporting events, and an expanded food court
to accommodate a variety of dining tastes.
We offer the convenience of
shopping for a variety of goods and services at our Exchange;
The
recreational environment at MCRD is constantly evolving, and as a result, the
Depot sports a small skateboard court, as well as a paintball
park. In addition, the Recreation Center has the latest bowling
technology and also has a virtual reality game room, and a mini-theatre. The
"Devil Dog Kids Club" is sponsored by Marine Corps Community Services at
MCRD. There are all sorts of events and contests throughout the year,
many with themes related to major holidays. Children up to 12-13
would enjoy being a "Devil Dog Kid".
Community Service. There are
plenty of opportunities to become involved in the San Diego area civilian
community. Organizations such as the USO, Armed Forces YMCA, and the
San Diego Area Chapter of the American Red Cross provide services to the
military community and also coordinate with other civilian-sector social
services organizations to facilitate military-civilian cooperation on
community-oriented activities and service projects.
Religious
Activities. The Religious Ministries office (Command Chaplain)
addresses the spiritual needs of the Depot community. The Chaplain's
office can also make informed referrals to those seeking guidance with respect
to choices available to them in the greater San Diego area regarding worship
services and activities of various faiths.
