PRE-KINDERGARTEN
All Houston County elementary schools
have a Pre-Kindergarten program.
The Houston County Pre-Kindergarten
Program provides four-year-olds with high quality preschool experiences in a
school environment. This program encourages children to learn through a hands-on
approach. The school readiness goals of the Pre-K Program are to provide
appropriate preschool experiences emphasizing growth in language and literacy,
math concepts, science, social studies, art, physical development and social
competence.
Each curriculum area has a variety of content standards to
address skills and dispositions. The Content Standards of Georgia's Pre-K
Program reflects current educational research and aligns with the Georgia
curriculum. The standards provide the foundation for instruction in all Georgia
Pre-K classrooms.
Parents are an integral part of the Pre-K program. The
goals of the parent involvement component include understanding the correlation
between home environment and school success and awareness of available community
resources.
The Pre-K program is a full school day, five days a week, 180
days a year. The program operates in conjunction with the regular school
calendar. Parents are expected to keep their child in the program for the full
day and year.
KINDERGARTEN
A full-day kindergarten program is
operated for children who will be five years of age on or before September 1.
Enrollment in the kindergarten program is on a voluntary basis. These early
childhood education classes develop a child's positive self concept and attitude
toward school and learning and provide foundation experiences which enhance the
child's physical, intellectual, social, and emotional growth. Each class of
approximately 18 students is staffed with one teacher and one
paraprofessional.
