**Mission Statement:
Our mission is to produce high achieving
students.
All Houston County schools are fully accredited by the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools. This accreditation means that all schools
offer equitable educational programs as a result of applied standards. These
standards are checked annually by SACS, and every five years the schools are
required to hold evaluations conducted by visiting educators. All schools also
meet all standards established by the Georgia Department of Education. The
system was named by SACS a "2003-2004 Super District for Quality Schools."
Houston County has 7 Middle Schools enrolling approximately 5650
students.

**High School Dress
Code Policy
Students of the Houston County School System are
expected to dress in a manner that is supportive of a positive learning
environment that is free of distractions and disruptions. There is a direct
correlation between student dress and student behavior. Students will be
expected to observe modes of dress, styles of hair, and personal grooming, which

High School Instruction:
The instructional program in
grades 9-12 operates on the semester system with students enrolling in six
classes each semester. Each course is taught in accordance with the Georgia
curriculum developed by the Georgia Department of Education.
Students
choose either the College Preparatory or Career/Technical Preparatory program of
study before entering the ninth grade. Advisement for course of study
is scheduled in the eighth grade and revisited in the tenth
grade. Both programs require four years of English and three years
each of science and social studies. The college prep program requires
four years of mathematics and two years of foreign language, and career/tech
prep requires three years of mathematics.
For a regular diploma, students
must have 22 Carnegie units of coursework and must also pass the Georgia High
School Graduation Test (GHSGT). The state of Georgia requires
students to take End-of-Course Tests in the following subjects: Ninth
Grade Literature, American Literature, Biology, Physical Science, U.S. History,
Economics, Algebra I, and Geometry.
In addition to academic core
subjects, students have the opportunity to take courses in foreign language,
visual arts, drama, band, chorus, physical education, and Air Force
JROTC. A variety of career/technical courses are available including
business education,
marketing, agriculture, health occupations, home
economics, graphics, drafting, automotive, and
technology. Apprenticeship programs are offered in aerospace, allied
health, and construction.
Gifted, special education, and remedial
education programs meet the needs of students who qualify. Advanced placement
courses are available for eligible students who wish to earn college credit
while in high school. Postsecondary options allow students to earn
high school credit while taking classes at local colleges or technical
institutes.
