YOUTH MOTOR VEHICLE REGULATIONS:
To obtain a driver's license in the State of Texas, you must be 16 years of age and have attended a driver's education class. The average cost is $214, but varies with different schools. Check the yellow pages of the telephone directory for other school listings. These classes are not taught in the school and generally last about a month. Most of the school districts have an agreement with the driving schools and teach the classes at the school, either before or after school. Three days into the course you receive a driver's permit. The permit will cost $5. The course contains hours of driving and several written tests. You must receive at least 70% to pass. Once you pass you are eligible to go to DPS to test for your driver's license, which is only a written test.

Texas has a zero tolerance for intoxicated minors. Even if a minor is not intoxicated as defined under the DWI statute, if the minor has ANY detectable amount in his system while he or she is operating a motor vehicle in a public place, as far as the law is concerned, the minor has committed the criminal offense of Driving under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor (DUIA by a Minor).
