MOVING WITH CHILDREN

Start preparing children for a move as soon as possible. Fear of the unknown exists, especially among children, and it is best for everyone to have honest discussions before and after the move.  A move always arouses some of anxiety for a family. Children, as well as adults, need time to deal with feelings of loss or separation.  The more time they have the better. Tell them as soon as you can, and let them know as many details as possible.

They'll need time to think it out and to make decisions as to what they will want to take along, which friends they want to confide in, and what questions they will need answered. Most children don't understand that parents really do not have a choice when moving.  If the parent is in the military, he or she must move.  It is a good idea to be very frank with the children.  Otherwise, they see their lives disrupted and may blame the parent who causes the move.
