DRIVERS LICENSE:
Any resident
of the State who wishes to operate a motor vehicle in Maine must have a current
license. New residents who hold a valid driver's license from another
state, must surrender that license and obtain a Maine driver's license within 30
days of establishing residency.
You do not need a Maine
driver's license if:
You are active duty military personnel possessing a
valid license while operating a vehicle. Any non-resident who is at
least 16 years of age and who has a valid operator's license or instruction
permit issued by his/her home state.
Vehicle checks - seat
belts are mandatory for all occupants of any motor vehicle operated in the state
of Maine, New Hampshire and all Federal Installations. In addition,
children under four years of age must be properly secured in a child safety
seat.
REGISTRATION:
Maine laws require that a Maine
motor vehicle registration must be applied for within 30 days if residence in
the State of Maine is established.
Non-resident Military
Registration. You can get a non-residency form and bring that with
you when registering your vehicles - this will save you some
money.
If you obtained a driver's license within the state of
a former duty station (other than Maine) it will remain valid until its
expiration as long as you remain on active duty. After expiration you
may obtain a license from your home state.
Helmets are
mandatory for all motorcycle drivers and passengers when driving on
base. Active duty members are required to provide proof of completion
of the Motorcycle Safety Course, in order to be issued a shipyard operator's
decal. Also, you must hold a valid State motorcycle license.
