OVERVIEW
LOCATION - U.S.A., Northeast, Maine, Kittery.
This area is a low-mid range cost area, however if you travel South into Portsmouth there is a decrease in the cost of living as there is no sales tax in New Hampshire. You may also travel North into Maine and the area is more mid-upper range. South is city, North is rural. Kittery itself has some of the best shopping available and is a huge tourist atraction due to it's numerous outlet stores and the well known Kittery Trading Post.
HISTORY - Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is one of four remaining publicly owned shipyards in the nation. Located about 50 miles north of Boston, Massachusetts, at the southernmost tip of Maine, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is the product of a ship building tradition going back almost 300 years. Portsmouth is the most experienced naval shipyard in submarine design, construction, modernization, and maintenance, and has a key role in the very-deep ocean submersible and special operations arenas. Portsmouth was the first government shipyard to build a nuclear powered submarine, the USS SWORDFISH was launched here August 27, 1957.
MISSION - To keep America's Navy #1 in the world by serving as a partner on the Navy maintenance team, providing the best value in industrial and engineering support for world-wide nuclear submarine maintenance and inter-service regional maintenance.
POPULATION SERVED - There are many diversties that the Shipyard deals with:
1.Coast Guard Commands
2.Department Of Defense(DOD) Police
3.Civilian and DOD contractors
4.Naval Ambualtory Care Center(NACC)
5.Numerous rotating Submarine Commands
6.Small military permanent party complement(Approx. 500)
7.Majority of civilian shipyard workers
SPONSORSHIP - The sponsorship program at PNS is very simple. Once the Command recieves word that a gain is expected, a sponsorship package is sent to the member which includes the following:
1.Map of installation and surrounding area
2.Welcome Aboard Letter from the Commanding Officer and specific department in which member will belong to.
3.Information packets discussing many useful guidance.
4.Contact information
5.Check-In procedures
The members personal sponsor will remain with the member until members needs are met. In the event this procedure fails, Check-In immediately with the Base Support Office (207)438-3203. After hours Check-In will be handled by the Command Duty Officer (207)451-3528 or Shipyard Duty Officer (207)252-6976. Personnel will be given temporary quarters and is required to Check-In the next business day. Memebers mail should be forwarded to the PNS mailroom.
TEMPORARY QUARTERS - Temporary lodging may be arranged through the help of a sponsor or reservations maybe made in advance at a nearby lodging facility. Member will be reimbursed for temporary lodging due to Command inability to support the members request.
RELOCATION ASSISTANCE - The Relocation Assistance Program (RAP) works to ease the transition of relocating. Providing essential support to military members, their families and retirees. RAP provides complimentary information about such topics as moving companies, housing, child and elder care, school systems, diversity resources, and other community services. In addition, RAP offers spouses and partners guidance in a job search, resume/curriculum vitae review, and career counseling. Briefs are given to folks, one-on-one and as a group. Any and all information on the New Hampshire ~ Maine areas can be provided via emails or by appointments.
CRITICAL INSTALLATION INFORMATION - Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is a small Nuclear Subbase, therfore a strict access program is implemented and maintained. Due to the size of the base PNS does not support or include some of the allorborate functions of your large installations. PNS has a relativley small compliment of military actually perminent party, most departments are civilian organized and managed.
