The Naval Hospital San Diego is located on Florida Canyon Drive,
adjacent to Balboa Park. The Naval Medical Center San Diego is the
largest and most technologically advanced military medical facility in the
world. The present hospital was commissioned in
1986.
Nicknamed the "Starship" of Navy Medicine, the hospital has played
a vital role in the history of San Diego for more than 70 years. From the
original tent dispensary established in 1917, to the high-tech, ultra modern
facility of the 1990's, the mission has remained constant -- to provide the
finest medical care available.
There are almost half a million people in
San Diego County eligible to receive care at the Naval Medical
Center. This care is provided by a military staff of about 3,000 and
approximately 1,200 civilians. A leader in the medical field, the
hospital is a major teaching center, and also operates a network of clinics
located at area military installations. Through these clinics,
emergency and ambulatory care is provided to the active duty populations of all
San Diego based ship and shore commands.
Throughout its proud history,
Navy Medical Center San Diego has established itself as a leader in the field of
medicine. That reputation for excellence continues today as the
"super star" staff propels the "starship" into the 21st century.
Also
available to military personnel and their family members are the Branch Medical
Clinics located on the military installation in the
area. The military member has first priority in obtaining
care from the military medical facilities, followed by the family members with
second priority.
Due to the fact that there are many military families in
this area, there are three TRIWEST Clinics established for your
use. These clinics are operated by the Navy and are staffed and
overseen by civilians. There are 3 types of TRIWEST care
available to the military family for medical care. Please review the
different types using the contact links.
