The 210,000 plus labor force represents Federal Government installations, tourism, aerospace industries, manufacturing and a number of headquarters for national organizations, including the national Olympic Committee, and many religious organizations.  Of the total labor force, approximately 40,000 people are employed by the federal government at Fort Carson Army Post, Peterson AFB, Schriever AFB, Cheyenne Mountain AFS and the Air Force Academy.  About 30,000 people are employed by high technology manufacturing and development companies.

The service portions of the economy remain quite extensive due to the continued emphasis on a recovering tourism industry.  The private sector economy is fueled by high tech and service industries.  Technical skills are in great demand as are computer software engineers.  In the service sector, many jobs require unskilled workers such as fast food restaurants and retail sales.  Openings always exist for experienced clerical workers.  A good source for employment information is the local newspaper, The Gazette.
