In 1948 the Atlantic Fleet Command headquartered in an abandoned hospital. It served as operational headquarters for the Fleet Air Command, and with NAS Oceana in the late '50's, formed the biggest air base on the East Coast. It is now Home to sixteen fighter squadrons - three squadrons of F-14 Tomcats, thirteen of F/A-18 Hornets and F/A-18 Super Hornets. The base is the sole East Coast Master Jet Base and home to all the east coast fighter (VF) and strike-fighter (VFA) units (excluding Marine Corps squadrons). Training is conducted by VFA-106 Gladiators in their F/A-18C/D Hornets and F/A-18E/F Super Hornets.
One other milestone in NAS's history occurred in 1968 when the station assumed a major role in putting a man on the moon. The air station became Recovery Control Center Atlantic, providing command, control and communications with all the ships and aircraft involved in the recovery operations of Apollo 7. Oceana Naval Air Station is vital to the defense of our county, and as a major employer is a key economic engine for the region.
Our mission is to support the Navy's Atlantic and Pacific Fleet Force of Strike Fighter Aircraft Joint/Inter-Agency Operations and to train and deploy the Navy's fighter/attack squadron, the F-14 Tomcats, F/A-18 Hornets and the two H-3 Sea King helicopters that are assigned for search-and-rescue duties. NAS Oceana is an interesting and exciting place to work, and with its mission supporting Naval Aviation's high performance attack and fighter aircraft, it is the Navy's most advanced Naval Air Station.
