The Naval Station Norfolk is geographically located in the Southeastern corner of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The area is collectively known as "Hampton Roads" and is commonly referred to as such by the residents of the area. Hampton Roads generally includes the Cities of Williamsburg, Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Suffolk, and is populated by over 1 million people.
History:
Naval Station Norfolk is situated in the Sewells Point area of the City of Norfolk, near the site of the battle of the Monitor and Merrimac,(CSS Virginia), and is the largest naval complex in the world. The complex is the combined home to the headquarters for Commander Naval Base Norfolk, as well as the Defense Department's largest supply center, and Naval Air Station Norfolk.
Nearby, just off Terminal Boulevard, is the headquarters compound for the Commander in Chief U.S. Atlantic Command and the Commander in Chief U.S. Atlantic Fleet.

Naval Station Norfolk's mission is to support and improve the personnel and logistics readiness of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. Naval Station Norfolk will provide seaport, airport, and squadron facilities, quality of life, and personnel management services with focus on the highest quality response to our customers' needs. Contact your gaining command to request a sponsor to assist you with your transition or use the Sponsor Assignment Aid (SSA) website in the Contact/Links. The SAA e-mails your request (with an assigned tracking number) to your gaining command's sponsor coordinator, who will assign a sponsor based upon the information you provide.
Temporary Quarters:
There are three Navy Lodges in the Hampton Roads area. Please call 1-800-NavyInn in advance to make reservations. Pets aren't permitted at the Navy Lodge facilities so please plan accordingly.
Service members also have the option of lodging at the Hampton Roads Regional Visiting Quarters, previously known as Bachelor Enlisted Quarters (BEQ) and Bachelor Officer Quarters (BOQ). Family members are allowed to stay in quarters with the service member.
The Regional Housing Office also maintains a list of temporary/short-term options on their website.
Relocation Assistance:
FFSC offers one-on-one consultations providing information about both military and community resources such as schools, housing, employment, and recreation. Other services include local 'Welcome Aboard Packets' and the Lending Locker. The Lending Locker provides short-term loaner household items such as dish packs, tri-fold mattresses, pack n play, tables and chairs to personnel on PCS orders. Critical Installation Information:
Hampton Roads is designated as a Critical Housing Area. Finding housing to meet your needs can be challenging therefore you may want to plan for an extended stay (1-2) weeks at a motel or Navy Lodge while searching for housing. Upon checking in, contact the Regional Housing office for information regarding base housing, the Rental Partnership Program and local housing.
Military childcare centers accept children from infancy to kindergarten age and include developmental programs. You may want to consider family home care in military housing or civilian childcare options due to the lengthy waiting list for the military Child Development Centers.
Fleet and Family Support Centers (FFSC) of Hampton Roads provide information and referral, education and training, counseling, and advocacy to assist commands in achieving operational readiness and to facilitate personal and family self-sufficiency. Service members and their families are encouraged to use the FFSC most convenient to them.
In addition, a Fleet and Family Support Center telephone hotline for information, referral, and assistance is available around the clock, seven days a week at (757) 444-NAVY or 1-800-372-5463.
