Medical Services

Naval Ambulatory Care Center (NACC), Newport is located at the south end of the Naval complex at the corner of Third and Cyprus Streets.  It provides the full range of inpatient and outpatient services for the naval shore activities and fleet units of the operating forces, dependents of armed services personnel, and other authorized beneficiaries.  Outpatients are managed in the newly constructed Comprehensive Health Care Clinic (Bldg. 23).  Inpatients are managed through an External Resource Sharing Agreement with the local civilian hospital, Newport Hospital, where care is provided by military physicians.

Active duty members and their family members are enrolled in the Family Medicine Program and assigned a personal Family Practitioner, who manages their primary care needs.  Patients new in the Narragansett Bay region should go to the Patient Administration Department within the first few days of arrival to register for provider assignment.  Patient Administration is located in the Comprehensive Health Care Clinic, Bldg 23.  Eligible beneficiaries should bring their health record(s), appropriate military identification card(s), social security number of each eligible family member, and any documentation of other health insurance.

Family Practice is a multi-faceted service providing comprehensive and continuous medical care to all beneficiaries, contingent upon the availability of space and facilities.  Emphasis is placed on early detection and recognition of illnesses, the prevention of disease and maintenance of health, and the ongoing management of patients in a community setting.  Family Physicians, educated and trained in several fields of medicine and surgery, are devoted to providing health care for the entire family.  Expanded service is provided by allied health care specialists, Family Practice Nurse Practitioners, Physician's Assistants and Independent Duty Hospital Corpsmen.

Naval Ambulatory Care Center, Newport has no emergency care capability.  For emergency care, call 911 for an ambulance or report to the nearest civilian facility.  Base ambulance service is provided by the Naval Station Newport (NAVSTA)  Fire Department.  For acute care, active duty personnel should report to Active Duty Sick Call or the Military Medicine Clinic (Bldg. 23).

Fleet Liaison will assist in coordinating all medical requirements or provide information regarding policies and procedures.  The Fleet Liaison point of contact can be reached at (401) 841-1346/DSN 948-1346.  All questions about services available and how to access them, including MEDEVAC, may be obtained through the Health Benefits Advisors at (401) 843-6294/6167  or DSN 948-6294/6167.

Active duty personnel reporting for care are expected to be in the uniform of the day.  Additionally, in June of 1998, the Department of Defense's TRICARE Program was introduced to this area.

Admission

Potential cases for hospitalization should be screened though a Medical Officer, (i.e., ship or squadron, or Active Duty Sick Call/Military Medicine) at the Clinic.  Recommendations will be made to the Naval Medical Treatment Facility medical staff for final disposition.

In emergencies, fleet personnel shall be transferred to the closest emergency facility.  For patients admitted on an emergency basis, all commands are requested to review the Enlisted Transfer Manual (NAVPERS 15909), which sets forth procedures governing the transfer of enlisted personnel requiring hospitalization.  Personnel who may be admitted for extended stay at Newport Hospital or other medical facilities in this area, may be transferred to this command with their service, health and pay records.  Personal property must be properly inventoried on S&A Form 17408 and a Standard Transfer Order.  Consultations with the Naval Ambulatory Care Center (NACC) should be completed in most cases prior to transfer for admission.

Medical Treatment from Civilian Sources

Information on TRICARE can be obtained from the Patient Administration Department, Bldg.23, NACC Newport or the local TRICARE Service Center located at Admiral's Gate Tower, 221 Third Street, Newport.

Injured or Ill Military Personnel Away From Their Command
