Marine Corps Air Station New River is located 4 miles south of downtown Jacksonville on Hwy 17, south.
Jacksonville is predominately a military town with 2 Marine Corps installations located in Jacksonville. Cost of living is relatively low but housing costs are on the rise. Very low property taxes. Located near many beautiful beaches on the Atlantic Ocean.
HISTORY:
Marine Corps Air Station New River was commissioned as Peterfield Point in April 1944. New River was redesignated as an air station on September 1, 1968. The station comprises some 2,600 acres. Marine Aircraft Group-26 commissioned June 16, 1952 at Cherry Point, moved to New River Air Facility in July 1954. The group is comprised of about 2,100 Marines assigned to 8 squadrons. A major reorganization occurred on May 1, 1972 when Marine Helicopter Training Group-40 was deactivated and Marine Aircraft Group-29 was born. MAG-29 is comprised of 2,100 Marines assigned to 7 squadrons. Also in 1972, the airfield was renamed after Brigadier General Keith B. McCutcheon, one of the fathers of Marine Corps helicopter aviation. McCutcheon Field is still the designation of the airstrip to this day.
MISSION
The mission of Marine Corps Air Station New River is to provide the necessary support for its tenant units; MAG-26 and 29. Both groups play a major role with their troop transport helicopter, and heavy lift capability in support of the Second Marine Aircraft Wing and Second Marine Division. H&HS is responsible for garrison activities aboard the station; MWSS-272 provides the logistical support to both MAGs; and CNATT Unit provides the schools.

SPONSORSHIP
In order to get a sponsor from your new command you must go through your admin section at your current command and request one. Your admin section will process your request by submitting a sponsorship request form to your new command. The sponsorship coordinator at your new command will assign a sponsor who should get in touch with you as soon as possible and assist you with your relocation needs such as acquiring a post office box to have your mail forwarded to while enroute.
Sergeants and below may check into the Air Station at Centralized Bachelor Billeting in building AS-4002. Take Curtis Rd., turn right onto Bankroft St. The building is on the right hand side. During regular working hours report in proper uniform. After hours, proper civilian attire is acceptable. Have orders in hand. Staff Noncommissioned Officers and above report to their respective commands. If you have questions contact the base operator at 910-451-1113(DSN 751).
TEMPORARY QUARTERS
There is no temporary lodging on site for families. Families must go to the Hostess House on Camp Lejeune, which is located on the other side of Jacksonville. If there is no vacancy then a letter of non-availability will be given to the member to go to a motel out in town. Bachelor Quarters for SNCOs and Officers is available at the BOQ and the BEQ. Reservations can be made in advance for temporary lodging information.
RELOCATION ASSISTANCE
Stop into Marine & Family Services for relocation services such as welcome aboard packages, settling in services and to check out household items from the loan closet until your household goods arrive. A mandatory Welcome Aboard Brief is held on the first or second Tuesday of the month. Spouses are encouraged to attend. CRITICAL INSTALLATION INFORMATION
"Move Over" law now being enforced in NC. While driving on NC roads and highways, if you are passing any police car that is pulled over to the side of the road the motorist must either move to the other lane or stop. This is to protect the law enforcement officer who may be standing outside his/her car.
