Support for military youths comes from a variety of sources. The Dolphin Community Center, the Fleet and Family Support Center, the Groton Youth and Family Services, and numerous church youth groups are some of the organizations which foster positive youth development.Human Resources Office, the MWR Human Resources Office, the local towns' Park and Recreation Departments, the youth service agency in each community, and the Department of Labor - Connecticut Works offer assistance.  However, many of their opportunities focus on the summer months only. Volunteer opportunities are also available. The American Red Cross welcomes youths between the ages of 13 and 18 for year round opportunities. Another avenue for teens over the age of 16 is the Military Volunteer Program for Youth."Youth Centers" are non-existent in this area. However, local park and recreation departments do an excellent job providing fun activities for young people. Also several area churches have well-organized, very active youth groups which meet in their respective churches.  These sites have the atmosphere of a "Drop-In Center" for teens.Frequently Asked Questions by Teens: What is the driving age in Connecticut?   You can receive your permit at 16. Are there curfews in the community? No What is there to do for fun? Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Department offers a wide variety of activities.  During the summer months, there are baseball, soccer, gymnastics, golf, and tennis camps. Throughout the year classes in karate, dance, swimming, horse back riding, and gymnastics are some of the offerings at the Dolphin Community Center. Area towns also offer a similar array of activities through their Park and Rec Programs. A popular gathering spot is the Mystic Community Center where teens meet for dances, parties, swimming and exercise. For golfing enthusiasts, SUBASE NLON has a popular golf course, and the local area golf courses have been highlighted in Connecticut Magazine.
