NEVADA DRIVERS LICENSE: You do not need a Nevada drivers license if you are on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces and have a valid license in your home state.  If your spouse will be working in Nevada then he/she will be required to get a Nevada drivers license.  If they already have a driver's license from another state, taking a written and vision test is usually all that is required to get a Nevada License.  Whether or not the spouse will be working, it is advisable the spouse get a Nevada drivers license as soon as possible.  Nevada laws have recently changed regarding teen's requirements...contact the local DMV for information.

Vehicle Ownership:

Check with your insurance company about the rate in the Las Vegas area.  Don't be surprised if it is higher than where you are.  Nevada registration requires proof of insurance and smog test.

Vehicles exempt from the smog inspection requirement are:

- Vehicles less than one year old - Vehicles made prior to 1968 - Vehicles powered by diesel fuel - Any two or three wheel vehicles, including motorcycles Vehicle Registration:

You are not required to register your vehicle in Nevada if you are on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces and your vehicle is registered in your home state.  However, you must have insurance which specifically covers your vehicle for being primarily garaged and operated in Nevada.

If you do desire to register your vehicle in Nevada and it is currently registered in another state, your vehicle identification numbers must be physically inspected by the Department of Motor Vehicles.  To register a vehicle as a non-resident you will need the following items with you.

1. Current vehicle registration from another state.
2. Your title (unless it is being held by lienholder).
3. Your out-of-state plates.
4. A vehicle inspection certificate as described above.
5. A smog emission inspection certificate.
6. Proof of insurance.
7. Vehicle's odometer reading.
8. A letter signed by an Officer stating you are in the military and are keeping your home of record in another state (see your unit orderly room for the letter).
9. Current copy of your Leave and Earning statement (LES).

On base vehicle registration is available at the Pass and Registration Office in building #20, the Visitor Control Center across from the main gate and in unit Orderly Rooms.  Operation hours for vehicle registration at Pass and Registration office, building #20, are 0730-1530,Monday-Friday except holidays.  The visitor control center hours are 0800-1700, Monday-Sunday.  When registering your vehicle in person, you must have with you identification media, driver's license, proof of insurance, and vehicle registration.
