The Early Enrichment and Kindergarten (EEK) Program was begun
in the fall of 1975. Early Enrichment and Kindergarten provides an instructional
program for children who narrowly miss kindergarten age. It is unique because it
provides a school readiness program for children who just miss kindergarten and
turn five in December and January; an alternative placement for kindergarten age
students; a highly cognitive oriented readiness learning experience based on an
individual assessment of student developmental needs; a social, academic,
culturally, and ethnically diverse learning opportunity in a heterogeneous
group; and intensive instructional time for identified students of special needs
by a credentialed teacher. The program operates on the regular school calendar.
Students are served in three classes at two locations in the district
(Seaside/Marina).
Children's Centers - serving pre kindergarten aged
children 18 months to 5 years of age. Rules for eligibility are established by
the California Department of Education, income and other state criteria apply -

The Children's Center Program has been in operation in
the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District since World War II when child
care was needed for parents working to support the war effort. Currently the
district is funded for 285 children. Parents must be low income, working,
training in a program which leads to employment, or looking for employment.
Children referred from protective services are also eligible for placement. The
Centers are open daily from 7:15 a.m. - 5:15 p.m. year round. Children in the
program are ages 18 months to five years old. The Centers provide a safe and
nurturing environment for young children as well as an educational
program.
Head Start/State Preschool - Serving pre kindergarten aged
