GENERAL INFORMATION: There are two Community Colleges
in the area, and several that offer degrees beyond the
associate's. They are: Golden Gate University, Chapman University,
and Monterey Institute of International Studies. New to the area is
the California State University at Monterey Bay (CSUMB), which opened its doors
in August 1995 with a freshman class of 700. CSUMB is located on 1700
acres of property formerly known as Fort Ord. It is a four-year
college, with emphasis on Oceanography and Marine Studies.
Monterey is
gaining and enhancing its reputation as the language capital of the United
States. Monterey Peninsula College and the Defense Language Institute
have established a partnership which allows them to grant an Associate in Arts
using the credits earned at the Institute and credits for coursework taken at
Monterey Peninsula College, combined with other credits a student may have
earned.
