Traffic - Idaho state traffic laws apply on Mountain Home AFB. Seat belts are mandatory. Helmets and reflective vests are required, along with a valid license and the required (expanded) safety training to operate a motorcycle on base.  Car seats are required for children under 40 lbs and under the age of 4.

Vehicle Checks - All vehicles entering or leaving Mountain Home AFB are subject to search.

To register a vehicle on base you will need proof of insurance, a valid operator's permit, and a current vehicle registration. The speed limit on base is 25 mph unless otherwise posted.

Idaho state will honor your home state driver's license as long as it remains valid and you remain on active duty. Idaho will also honor your dependents' home state driver's license, as long as it remains valid.  If you become an Idaho resident, you must obtain an Idaho driver's license. The driving age in Idaho is 15.  Driver's manuals can be obtained at the Mountain Home police department.

Idaho hunting and fishing licenses are sold in the Base Exchange as well as local sporting goods stores.  Idaho requires everyone born on or after January 1, 1975 to complete a state-approved hunter education course before they can buy a hunting license.  Seasons vary as where you hunt or fish, so check regulations before you go out. In order to purchase resident licenses and tags you will need to show that you have been stationed in the state of Idaho for at least thirty days.  Items that may be used will include a copy of Form 899 (your PCS orders).  The only date the vendor is to use from this form is the "Report No Later Than" date located in Block 6 on Form 899,  a travel voucher, showing the date arrived in Idaho, a leave and earnings statement with an Idaho address, a cable tv bill, rent receipts, mortgage statements, a letter from the member's First Sergeant or Squadron Commander affirming the person has been officially transferred, stationed, domiciled, and on active duty in Idaho since a specific date.  The specific date giving the person at least the required 30 days.  This letter is to be on squadron stationary and signed by the First Sergeant or the Squadron Commander. Spouses and dependent children are considered residents for licensing purposes.  Dependent children are defined as under 18 years of age.

To register your vehicle, boat, motorcycle or RV in the state of Idaho you must visit the Motor Vehicle Department, next to the County courthouse in Mountain Home.  If you purchased a new vehicle overseas and want to register it in the state, you will be charged Idaho state tax of 6%.  Call the motor vehicle department for more details.

Military and Civilian ID cards are obtained through the Military Personnel Flight, Customer Service area.  Bring your old ID card if needing a replacement.  If you are newly married, you need a copy of the marriage certificate.

If you are going to be residing in the dormitories, your weapons will have to be stored in the base armory.  If you will be living on base in base housing, your weapons will be registered through your unit orderly room.
