When a member desires the assignment of a youth sponsor, the
relocation office makes an attempt to assign a sponsor who has children the same
age as the children of the inbound member. The Child Care specialist conducts a
babysitting course designed for children of military personnel 12 and
over. After they complete the course, they are put on a referral list
to be given to members in housing who desire the services of a
babysitter.
There are many local businesses that hire students during the
summer months. Because of the lack of public transportation in this
area, individuals desiring to work are responsible for their own
transportation.Although there is no youth center, a summer youth program
operates from the Community Center.See the section "EDUCATION" for educational
opportunities in the Kansas City area. Because of the size of the
greater Kansas City area and the number of school districts, it would be
virtually impossible to cover each one. When you find out your
service member parent will be transferred to this area, request a teen
sponsor. You can then be hooked up with someone your age that can
give you the lowdown on what to expect when you get here.
If you plan on
driving when you get here, both Kansas and Missouri allow you to get a
restricted drivers license at 15 and an unrestricted license at 16.
After
you and your family get settled, be sure to check with the local community where
you live about curfews on teens. Each community differs on their
policies.
Located just west of the metro area is the Sandstone outdoor
amphitheater which attracts big-name entertainment from rock, to rap, to
country-western. And if you are into sports, be sure to check out the
Chiefs and the Royals. MWR offers discount tickets.
