LOCATION
Although there is no major military installation in Kansas City, Kansas City metropolitan area is home to several USMC commands/facilities. Marine Corps Mobilization Command (MOBCOM); Headquarters, 9th Marine Corps District; 24th Marine Regiment, 4th MARDIV REIN FMF; Marine Corps Recruiting Station; Military Enlistment Processing Station; Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS); and the Manpower Information Systems Support Activity. The Kansas City metropolitan area encompasses counties in both Missouri and Kansas. There are numerous small cities that are incorporated into the metropolitan Kansas City area. Excellent civilian medical facilities exist throughout the area, most accept Tricare. Some consider Kansas City a shopping mecca. Shopping centers and outlet malls are abundant and provide exceptional shopping opportunities. We also serve up some of the best barbeque to be found anywhere.
HISTORY
On Apr. 1, 2004, the Marine Corps Reserve Support Command of old is no more. In its place stands the more aptly named Marine Corps Mobilization Command (MOBCOM). The MOBCOM of today has its roots in the old Reserve Records Branch (Class III). In 38 years, MOBCOM has changed from a custodian of inactive reserve record books to a command spread over 47 states, providing peacetime and wartime support to both the active duty Marine Corps and the families and communities of reserve Marines.
MISSION
Marine Corps Mobilization Command is directly responsible for the administration and mobilization of the more than 60,000 Individual Ready Reserves of the Marine Corps.
POPULATION SERVED
Providing support to the 60,000 Marine Reservists are 380 active duty Marines and 170 civilian employees.
SPONSORSHIP
When notification is received that there is an inbound service member, a sponsor is assigned based on the anticipated work section. If you haven't been contacted by your assigned sponsor prior to your departure, please call the MOBCOM Customer Service Center for instructions. They may be reached at 1-800-255-5082, 0700-1830 CST.
TEMPORARY QUARTERS
The Lodging Facility at MOBCOM offers a "home away from home" for inbound personnel and their families. If you know your arrival date, reservations are recommended. They may be reached at 1-816-843-3850. Their hours are 0630-1145 CST.
RELOCTION ASSISTANCE
Our Relocation Assistance Program is located in the Community Service Center. You can find welcome aboard packets, maps and other local information. We also maintain a Loan Locker that provides temporary kitchen equipment, futons, ironing boards, irons and baby items.

CRITICAL INSTALLATION INFORMATION
MOBCOM and DFAS Kansas City are on the current BRAC list. The mission of MOBCOM is being realigned to Marine Forces Reserve, New Orleans. Currently, there is no anticipated closure date.
