Preparation--thinking ahead-- is the key in successfully handling
in-transit emergencies. It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU
HAND-CARRY A CURRENT COPY OF THE STANDARD INSTALLATION TOPIC-EXCHANGE SERVICE
BOOKLET (SITES) WITH YOU WHILE IN-TRANSIT TO MCGUIRE!! Be sure to
have necessary documents, such as orders, passports, medical records, shot
records, birth certificates, marriage licenses, maps, important phone numbers,
and other necessary paperwork. Consider using traveler's checks,
which unlike cash, may be reported and replaced if lost/stolen, and,
keep the phone numbers of credit card companies handy in case your cards are
lost or stolen on route, so you may report this quickly and avoid
problems.
Be prepared! Always anticipate the possibility of an
in-transit emergency. Be aware of agencies who may render aid, such
as, nearby military facilities, Red Cross, Salvation Army, and, local hospitals
in case of a medical emergency. You may wish to check out the
American Automobile Association (AAA) prior to departure, for assistance with
automobile emergencies, and other travel assistance. Be sure your
automobile is in good running condition, and, is prepared for minor mishaps such
as flat tires, or dead batteries. In New Jersey and the surrounding
region, the major interstates and turnpikes are well-traveled, and have
emergency "call boxes" located frequently along the roadside; and, are
well-patrolled by State Police. *Although not an "emergency", keep in
mind that New Jersey and the surrounding region does have many toll roads and
bridges; keep in mind you will require extra money to cover this expense! For
emergency assistance, several agencies and services are available; depending on
the emergency circumstances. The Family Support Center is a good
starting point for Information and Referral to appropriate emergency-related
services; to include Red Cross, Air Force Aide Society, Chaplain, Mental
Health/Counseling, and others.
