As we mentioned in the Base Housing section, waiting lists for housing are often at least 6 months, so many people arriving at McChord will have to rent housing off base while they wait.  Others may choose to stay off base in one of the local communities.
Check out the Apartment and Rentals sign post.
Generally, rental rates are high for off-base housing, but it's usually no problem finding something to meet your needs within BAH rates.  Prices vary, depending on location, size and amenities.  Two bedroom apartments are usually readily available.  Finding housing may be a bit more challenging if you have pets.  McChord AFB participates in a Rental Partnership Program.  This program benefits military members by rent reduction, waived security deposits and credit checks, and a reduced cleaning fee.  Pets are also allowed under this program.  Benefits to the landlord are that you must sign a lease and pay your rent by allotment.  The majority of housing in this program is in apartment complexes.
