The Maxwell and Gunter Youth Activity Centers are divided
into three major components: before and after school care, youth sports and open
recreation.
Before and After School Care is Monday through Friday
beginning at 6:30 a.m. for children ages 5 through 12. Maxwell
Elementary School students are driven to school at 7:00 a.m. by
bus. Fees for this service vary according to household
income.
Youth Sports include flag football, soccer, basketball,
baseball, and swimming. Classes offered include: piano, dance,
tumbling, tap, ballet, jazz and karate.
Open Recreation allows
children to be a part of such groups as the fitness club, torch club and
keystone club, and it also teaches children life skills such as cooking. Hours
are 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; 5:30 to 11:00 p.m. Friday, and
2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday. Annual membership for open
recreation is $24.oo and children must be at least 9 years old to
participate.
The Maxwell Youth Center also operates a Pen Pal
Program for incoming teens. If you are interested in making
contact with a teen your age, please contact the Maxwell Youth Center or the
Gunter Youth Center found at Contacts/Links.
For additional information
on upcoming youth center programs call (334) 953-6292.
Employment is
limited for teens on base. There is a summer youth volunteer program
that provides jobs on base for many teens. The youth volunteer
program is an excellent opportunity for teens to gain valuable work experience,
and recognition for a job well done. Youth who are interested in the
volunteer program should contact the Maxwell Family Support
Center. The Career Focus Program at the Family Support Center can
also assist teens with employment information.
